John was recorded by the 1851 census living with his mother and sister in Glasgow. He was aged 8 years.

John's mother applied for parish relief again when he was 10 years old, in October 1853. He had got employment in Stewart's paper reading shop and earned 2/- for that.

In his mother's Poor Relief application of July 1855, the family were living at 1 Wellmeadow Street, John was earning 2/- -the only earnings the family had by inference as his mother was 'idle'.

In January 1858 John was 15 years of age and 'in Gutta Percha work 2/6'. They were still at the same address.
