  General Notes:

James George, aged 9 years, was recorded by the 1851 census for Kilmarnock parish, living at Thompson's Land with his widowed mother and his older brother, Thomas. James was recorded as having been born in Ayr and was a scholar.

In the 1861 census James was probably the 'nephew' of James George staying with his uncle and his family at 12 Kelk Place Kilmaurs. He was aged 19 years and a Coal Miner. He was unmarried and was born in Ayr.

In 1871 James George was living in Dalmeny parish West Lothian with his second wife Jessie. His mother Susan Waters [sic], recorded as "mother in law" presumably on information given by Jessie, also lived there, with two young children, Robert aged 7 years, and John, aged 4 months. James George was a shale miner.

The census of 1881 recorded James and Jessie George, still living in the shale mining parish of Dalmeny with a growing family: James George, 37, Jessie George, 35, John George, 10, Jessie George, 7, Maggie George, 5, James George, 3, Alexander George, 8 months.

In 1891 James and Jessie George were recorded by the census living at 29 Gavieside, West Calder, with five children between 20 years and 6 years, the youngest being Thomas. James continued to be a shale miner.

James George was the informant of the death of his mother, Susan Smith, at Queensferry in 1892. His address then was noted as 24 Gavie Side, West Calder.

By the 1901 census James George was a coal miner hewer, aged 58 years, living at 52 Main Avenue, Inveresk, Midlothian, with his wife, his younger sons Alexander and Thomas, and an adopted daughter named Maggie George. 3 4 5 6 9 11
