  General Notes:

The 1841 Census recorded Susan, her husband John, her son Thomas, and possibly her sister Eliza, living together in the High Street, Ayr. Susan was in the 20-24 age range and had been born in Ireland.

The 1851 census for Kilmarnock parish in Ayrshire recorded Susan George and her two sons, Thomas and James, living at Thompson's Land. Susan was a widow aged 33 years. Her birthplace was Ireland. Her occupation was noted as ' Hand sewer pauper'.

When her son James married in 1862 Susan was recorded as being a widow.

In 1871 the census recorded 'Susan Waters' living with James and Jessie George in Dalmeny Oil Works cottage in West Lothian. her age was noted as 54 years and her birthplace as Ireland. She was recorded as 'mother in law', a misleading record as the relationship record applies to the head of the household as a rule, and she was in fact the mother of James, but the mother in law of Jessie. Probably this was a misunderstanding if Jessie gave the information for the census record.

When Susan Smith died in 1892 she was recorded as 'widow of William Smith labourer previously of John George factory worker' and her recorded age at death was 68 years. Parental information was scant in her death certificate. Apart from a surname for her father ' ---Whatters ' 'Not known' was inscribed. 3 4 5 6 8

  Research Notes:

SUSANNA WHITTERS' BIRTHPLACE

In the IGI there are less than a dozen 'Whitters' recorded in Ireland, with only a couple at the very start of the 19th century.

Susan next married William SMITH, son of Thomas SMITH and Mary KANE, on 6 April 1857 in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland.2 (William SMITH was born in 1806 in Stevenston parish, Ayrshire, Scotland 2 9 and died before 24 February 1892 2.)

The marriage took place after banns and according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. John Campbell Jamieson, minister of Dreghorn parish, officiated. The witnesses were Margaret Lambie and Jane Dunlop.
