Mary Ritchie Tweedley, according to her birth certificate, was born in Edinburgh on 22 August 1893, and her birth was registered in the St George district of Edinburgh by her mother, who signed herself Annie Tweedley, on 2 September 1893 before the registrar John Aitchison. The note by the registrar at Hamilton, William J. T. Rae, states that the certificate was subsequently transcribed at Hamilton on 19 September 1893.

Mary Tweedley, aged 7 years, was recorded by the 1901 census for Barony Parish, Glasgow living with her parents at 29 Ardenlea Street Glasgow. She was a scholar. Her birthplace was recorded as Edinburgh. 3 5


Mary married George LOWRY, son of John LOWRY and Mary ROBERTSON, on 10 August 1936 in 23 Wellington Street, Glasgow, Scotland.1 2 (George LOWRY was born about 1884 2 and died before 25 May 1960 4.)

Note: 644/08 1711 is the reference for this marriage. The bride's surname has been indexed erroneously by the GRO under "Jweedley" although the original is clearly Tweedley.

The marriage took place "By Declaration" in presence of Robert George Finlayson of 315 Edinburgh Road Glasgow and Mary Daley or Daly of 21 Lawmoor Street Glasgow. The Warrant of the Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire was dated 10 August 1936.

George Lowry was a railway shunter by occupation. He was 52 years old and unmarried. His address was 22 Bothwell Street Hamilton. Both of his parents were deceased.

Mary Ritchie Tweedley was a nurse. She lived at 5 Saffronhall Crescent Hamilton. She was single and aged 42 years. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered on 11 August 1936 at Glasgow. 1 2
