'Eliza McInarney' was born in August 1856 in Airdrie. Her father, Patrick, who had been present where the birth occurred, was the informant of her birth. He gave notice before William Landless, registrar, at Airdrie on 15 August 1856 and made his X mark.

Elizabeth McNarney was only 5 years old when the 1861 census was taken. She was the second youngest child of seven children living with their parents at Coatdyke in the parish of Old Monkland. She had been born in Airdrie and was recorded as a scholar.

According to 1871 census Elizabeth and her family were living in the parish of Gartsherrie in Old Monkland, in the hamlet of Coatdyke. The address was 1 Clarkson's Land. The house had at least one room with a window. Living there were her father, Patrick, his wife, his sons John and Francis, and Elizabeth. Their sister, Catherine, was married by then. Elizabeth was aged 14 years, unmarried, with no occupation given. She had been born in New Monkland Parish.

In 1881 James and Eliza Torley were living with their son Francis aged 1 year in Cameron's Land in the eastern district of Old Monkland parish. Eliza was recorded as born in Airdrie and aged 23 years. Her husband, also born in Airdrie, was 43 years old and worked as a coal miner.

The census of 1891 recorded James Torley living with his wife and three sons in Blantyre Lanarkshire, at Annsfield Place. James was 52 years old, his wife 32 years old, and their sons Francis, James and Patrick were 11, 4 and 1 years respectively.

Elizabeth died in February 1898 and her death certificate recorded her as Elizabeth Torley married to James Forley, coal miner. Her recorded age was 41 years. At that time her father was deceased. ^{2 5 6 7}

ELIZABETH FORLEY

An 'Elizabeth Forley' or 'Torley' was a witness at the marriage of John McConville to Elizabeth Lundy in 1873. It may be this woman. If so, her mother and John's father may be related.

Elizabeth's mother died about two weeks after her daughter on 10 March 1898.

James Forley, Elizabeth's widower, gave notice of her death before the registrar at Blantyre, Hugh MacMillan, on 26 February 1898.

Elizabeth married James TORLEY, son of James TORLEY and Betsy TAYLOR, on 9 November 1878 in St Patrick's RC Church, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (James TORLEY was born in 1837 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland ^{1 6} and died on 19 December 1902 in 14 Govan Street, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland ⁴.). The cause of his death was acute pneumonia over 7 days.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was solemnised after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant priest was Father Michael O'Keeffe CC, and the witnesses were John McAnarney and Elizabeth Murphy.

James Torley, who made his X mark, was a single man, aged 40 years. His address was noted as Clarkson's Land, Coatdyke. He was an ironwork labourer. His father was deceased.

Elizabeth McAnerney, who made her X mark, was also single and was aged 23 years. Her address, too, was Clarkson's Land, Coatdyke. She was a cotton mill worker by occupation. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Coatbridge on 11 November 1878, James Mitchell being the registrar. ¹
