When Francis was born in 1880 it was his father, James Turley, who was the informant of his birth.

The 1901 census for Blantyre recorded Francis living with James and Catherine Cavanagh, his aunt and uncle. Francis was a boarder in their house. He was recorded as aged 21 years, a coal miner, born in the parish of Old Monkland.

Francis gave notice of his father's death in 1902. his address was noted as 30 Calder Street, Blantyre. ³
