  General Notes:

When his son, Francis Turley, was born, James Turley, who had been present where the birth took place, gave notice of the birth before the registrar, Andrew Baird, at Calderbank on 2 March 1880 and made his X mark. He was a coal miner by occupation. The birth certificate also recorded the date of the marriage of Francis Turley and Elizabeth McInarney as December 1878 at Coatbridge.

James Torley was a coal miner, according to the 1881 and 1891 census entries.

James Torley was the informant of his wife Elizabeth's death at Blantyre in 1898 before the registrar, Hugh MacMillan. He made his X mark. James had been present in 13 Hall Street Blantyre where the death took place.

When James Torley died in 1902 he was recorded as the widower of Elizabeth McInearney, and as aged 55 years. His parents were recorded as deceased, but no names other than the surname Torley. Francis Torley his son was the informant of his death. 4


James married Elizabeth McANERNEY, daughter of Patrick McNERNEY and Catherine McCONVILL, on 9 November 1878 in St Patrick's RC Church, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Elizabeth McANERNEY was born 10 August 1856 at 2.00 am in 65 Aitchison Street, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland, baptised on 17 August 1856 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland 6 and died 25 February 1898 at 8.00 pm in 13 Hall Street, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was broncho pneumonia over 5 days.4


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was solemnised after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant priest was Father Michael O'Keeffe CC, and the witnesses were John McAnarney and Elizabeth Murphy.

James Torley, who made his X mark, was a single man, aged 40 years. His address was noted as Clarkson's Land, Coatdyke. He was an ironwork labourer. His father was deceased.

Elizabeth McAnerney, who made her X mark, was also single and was aged 23 years. Her address, too, was Clarkson's Land, Coatdyke. She was a cotton mill worker by occupation. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Coatbridge on 11 November 1878, James Mitchell being the registrar. 1
