General Notes:
On 28 March 1824 Michael, son of Michael Crawly and Mary Docherty was baptised at St Ninian's parish Paisley. the sponsors were Edward Downey and Mary Downey.
The 1841 census for Paisley Low parish recorded an Edward and Elisabeth Downie and (presumably) their two sons, Edward and James, living in Stock Street. Edward was Irish born and aged in the 40-44 years age range. His occupation was noted as cotton hand loom weaver.
APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF 1847 Edward applied for parochial relief on 18 October 1847 in Paisley. He was aged 42 years and his wife Elizabeth Kelly was 38 years. They lived at Semple Land, 75 High Street, Paisley. Edward was a native of County Londonderry. His occupation was that of mason (slightly unclear).
He had four children living at home: Edward aged 10 years James aged 8 years Patrick aged 9 years John aged 5 years
Edward was employed by Mr Nixon. In religious matters he was a Roman Catholic.

Edward was resident in Paisley in March 1851. With his brother, he was able to swear the birth place of their sister Agnes for her parish application.
The 1851 census for the parish of Paisley High recorded Edward Downie, his wife, Elizabeth, and their sons, Edward and James, living at 37 High Street. Edward was aged 55 years and was a Hand Loom Weaver. His birthplace was noted as Londonderry, Ireland.
APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF 24 OCTOBER 1864: "This man was disabled five weeks ago by Palsy. Wife in good health. Children: Edward 27 years and a printer in Cowcaddens Glasgow James 25 years a painter and working with brother. Both employed by Reid Co and working at Cowlairs Station Patrick is not his child dead John also dead Residence at 1 Storie Street, Paisley, since 1848 and Jn is alive (? unclear) He was working at mining? till disabled and son, Edward, has no children and has above 20/- weekly. Son's address 141/2 Gayfield St off Great Western Road, Glasgow.
Edward died in Paisley in November 1868. His recorded age was 67 years. His death certificate recorded him as married to Elizabeth Kelly and his occupation as shawl weaver. Both of his parents were dead. 1 3 4 6 7

Edward Downie, son of the deceased, of 14 Gayfield Street Glasgow, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, William Waters, at Paisley on 10 November 1868. 6
