  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Paisley Low recorded Elisabeth Downie [sic] aged in the 30-34 age group, (probably) wife of Edward Downie. She was a pirn winder and had been born in Renfrewshire.

Elizabeth Downie was also recorded in the 1851 census for Paisley High parish, living at 37 High Street. She was a sewer and aged 42. Her birthplace was noted as Paisley.

In the PARISH RELIEF APPLICATION entry for 1864 in her husband's file, Elizabeth was reported to be in good health.

In 1871 the census recorded Elizabeth Downie aged 62 years old, and her son James Downie aged 31 years old, a carriage maker, living at 59 Bellgrove Street Glasgow. They had both been born in Paisley. 3 4 5 6


Elizabeth married Edward DOWNIE, son of Edward DOWNIE and Agnes DRIPPS, on 16 April 1837 in Paisley Middle Parish, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 2 (Edward DOWNIE was born about 1799 in County Derry, Ireland 1 4 5 and died 7 November 1868 at 9.30 pm in 75 High Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland 7.). The cause of his death was bronchitis over 4 weeks.


  Marriage Notes:

Edward and his wife were married in 1837 by the Roman Catholic Clergyman Mr Bremner. 1
