  General Notes:

In 1841 the census recorded James as the younger of two children living in Stock Street with Edward and Elisabeth Downie. He was aged 1 year and his birthplace was Renfrewshire.

James was 11 years old when recorded by the 1851 census for Paisley High living at 37 High Street. He, like his brother Edward, was a Handloom Weaver's assistant. He too had been born in Paisley.

In 1861 Edward Downie and James Downie were living at 34 1/2 Holmhead St Glasgow as lodgers in the household of Kenneth Cameron. Both were born in Paisley. Edward was 23 years old and James 21 years old. Edward was a coach painter, and James was a "coachbuilder Carriage Maker".

James was working as a painter in 1864. He was 25 years old then. He was employed, along with his brother Edward, by Reid Co in Cowcaddens, Glasgow, working in Cowlairs Station. 1 3 4 5
