In 1841 Edward was one of two children recorded living in the home of Edward and Elisabeth Downie in Stock Street, Paisley. He had been born in Renfrewshire and he was 3 years old.

The 1851 census recorded a 13 year old Edward living with his parents and brother at 37 High Street, Paisley. His birthplace was recorded as Paisley. He was a Handloom Weaver's assistant.

In 1861 Edward Downie and James Downie were living at 34 1/2 Holmhead St Glasgow as lodgers in the household of Kenneth Cameron. Both were born in Paisley. Edward was 23 years old and James 21 years old. Edward was a coach painter, and James was a "coachbuilder Carriage Maker".

Edward was reported in 1864 to be a printer working in Cowcaddens, Glasgow, with his younger brother, James. They were both employed by Reid Co, and working at Cowlairs Station. Edward had no children and earned 'above 20/- weekly'. His address was 141/2 Gayfield St off Great Western Road, Glasgow.

In November 1868 Edward was the informant of his father's death in Paisley. His own address then was noted as 14 Gayfield Street Glasgow. 1 2 3 4 5
