  General Notes:

Roman Catholic Records
St Mirin's Parish Paisley
Baptisms

"At Paisley this nineteenth day of March 1820 I, the undersigned, baptised Mary Ann born on the twentieth day of Febry 1820 lawful daughter of James Wade and Ann Quigly. The sponsors were John Collins and Margaret Boggan.

There are few 1841 and 1851 entries that could be considered as referring to Mary Ann Wade, and of those few, even fewer have enough sound correlative information to be considered almost certainly her.

The 1861 census for Barony parish in Glasgow recorded Mary Ann Wade living as a lodger in a household at 55 Warroch Street in the Anderston district of Glasgow, the household of Mary Wallace a lodging house keeper aged 57 years and born in Ireland. Mary Ann's age was recorded as 35 years and her place of birth as Paisley Renfrewshire. She was unmarried. By occupation she was a 'cotton minder'.

In 1881 Elizabeth MacKenzie and Maryann Wade were recorded by the census living in Polnoon Street, Eaglesham, Renfrewshire. Both were born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Maryann was recorded as aged 42 years and Elizabeth as 40 years (both ages seriously underestimated). Elizabeth was the head of the household and her occupation was that of hawker. Maryann's relationship to her was that of boarder and she was a housekeeper by occupation. Elizabeth was a widow and Maryann was unmarried.

Elizabeth McKenzie was recorded by the 1891 UK census for Eaglesham, Renfrewshire, living at 2 Polnoon Street , in a dwelling with two windowed rooms, with her sister Margaret [sic] Wade. 'Margaret' Wade was recorded as 68 years of age, and her birthplace as Paisley Renfrewshire. No occupation was noted. She was given the status of widow, like her sister.

The 1901 census for Eaglesham recorded Mary Ann Wade as head of the household comprising herself and her sister Elizabeth living at number 2 Polnoon Street. Mary Ann was recorded as a single woman of 70 years of age and born in Paisley. She had formerly been a cotton weaver.

Mary Ann died in 1904 at the recorded age of 77 years. (She was in fact 84.) She was described in her death certificate as having been a 'millworker single'. Both of her parents were already dead. 2 3 4 5

  Research Notes:

WARROCH STREET

was named for the junior partner of Murdoch, Warroch & Co., who had a brewery here in 1765. In 1766 Mr. Murdoch, the senior partner, was Provost of the town, and during his tenure of office he was presented, when in London, to King George the Third, who remarked that he was the handsomest Scotsman he had ever seen.

AGE

Mary Ann Wade's age seems to have been regulary underestimated in the recorded sources we have. This is not uncommon among pre-literate people.

  Medical Notes:

John Dodd MB CM of Eaglesham certified the causes of Mary Ann's death.

Her sister, Elizabeth McKenzie, gave notice of her death before William Browning, registrar, at Eaglesham on 6 June 1904 and made her X mark.
