User ID: Y743. General Notes: "SIR JAMES DOUGLAS, succeeded his father as Lord of Dalkeith. He is first named in two entails dated 2 January 1374-75, providing the barony of Kincavill and others to him as son of Sir James Douglas and Agnes Dunbar, when he must have been a mere infant." James married Elizabeth STEWART, daughter of John [ruled as Robert III] STEWART King of Scots and Annabella DRUMMOND Queen of Scots, before 10 November 1387.1 (Elizabeth STEWART was born about 1372.) Marriage Notes: "Elizabeth, who was married to Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith." James next married Janet BORTHWICK, daughter of Sir William BORTHWICK 2nd of of that Ilk, Captain of Edinburgh Castle and Unknown, before 1439.1 2 (Janet BORTHWICK was born about 1395.) Marriage Notes: "Janet, married, first (see note below), as his second wife, to James Douglas, Lord of Dalkeith (whose first wife was the Princess Elizabeth, third daughter of Robert III.), and, secondly (see note below), to George Crichton, Earl of Caithness." (page 96) "In Parliament, 14 March 1457-58, the Chancellor, addressing himself to James, third Lord Dalkeith, who was about to marry the Princess Joan, sister of James I., stated that the King purposed to create him Earl of Morton, whereupon Lord Borthwick, on behalf of his sister Lady Dalkeith, represented that the lands of Morton heritably belonged to her and her son, and prayed that the King might do nothing to the prejudice of their rights. In answer the Chancellor explained that Lord Dalkeith was not to receive his title from Morton in Nithsdale, but from Morton in the territory of Caldercleir, of which declaration Lord Borthwick had a formal record preserved."
