Janet married Sir James DOUGLAS 2nd of Dalkeith, son of Sir James DOUGLAS Lord of Dalkeith and Agnes DUNBAR, by 26 February 1439 (charter).1 (Sir James DOUGLAS 2nd of Dalkeith was born about 1373 and died by May 1441 2.)

"Janet (Borthwick), married, first, as his second wife, to James Douglas, Lord of Dalkeith (whose first wife was the Princess Elizabeth, third daughter of Robert III.), and, secondly, to George Crichton, Earl of Caithness." (page 96)

"In Parliament, 14 March 1457-58, the Chancellor, addressing himself to James, third Lord Dalkeith, who was about to marry the Princess Joan, sister of James I., stated that the King purposed to create him Earl of Morton, whereupon Lord Borthwick, on behalf of his sister Lady Dalkeith, represented that the lands of Morton heritably belonged to her and her son, and prayed that the King might do nothing to the prejudice of their rights. In answer the Chancellor explained that Lord Dalkeith was not to receive his title from Morton in Nithsdale, but from Morton in the territory of Caldercleir, of which declaration Lord Borthwick had a formal record preserved." (page 97)

"It is not certain when she (Elizabeth Stewart) died, but Sir James (Douglas, 2nd of Dalkeith) married, secondly, before 1439, Janet, eldest daughter of Sir William Borthwick..... She survived Sir James, and married, secondly, Sir George Crichton, afterwards Earl of Caithness, whom she also survived."

Janet next married Sir George CRICHTON Earl of Caithness, son of Stephen CRICHTON of the Cairns, Sheriff of Linlithgowshire and Wife UNKNOWN.2 3 (Sir George CRICHTON Earl of Caithness was born about 1390.)

"The Earl married, secondly, Janet Borthwick, daughter of Sir William Borthwick of that Ilk, and widow of Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith. By her he had a daughter : - Janet, who was married, in 1454, to John Maxwell, eldest son of Robert, second Lord Maxwell .... "
