The 1841 census for Dumfriesshire recorded John Quigly living with his family in Bridge Street Lockerbie. John was the eldest of the six children listed. He was in the 20-24 years age range and had been born in Dumfriesshire. He worked as an agricultural labourer.

In 1851 John Quigley was head of a household living in the village of Ecclefechan in the parish of Hoddam, Dumfriesshire, according to the census taken that year. He was a carrier by occupation and aged 33 years. He had been born in Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.

The 1881 census for Blairgowrie, Perth, recorded John Quigley as head of the household living at 21 Allan Street. With him were recorded his wife Jane, their daughter Ann, and William Menzies a boarder who was an unemployed waiter. He was unmarried, aged 44 years, and had been born in Dull, Perthshire. John Quigley was recorded as 64 years of age and a 'Temperance Hotel keeper'. He had been born in Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.

In his death certificate of 1887 John was recorded as 'John Quigley stationmaster married to Jane Jardine'. His recorded age was 70 years. Both of his parents were deceased. 3 5 6

John Thomson, John's son in law who was present where John died, gave notice of John's death before A. Kirkland, registrar, at Edzell on 30 November 1887. 5

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The minister was George Kirkwood, Chaplain to the Forces. Henry Robertson Keills and Robina Smith were witnesses.

Alex Lochhead was a colour sergeant with the Argyle [sic] and Sutherland Highlanders. He was a bachelor of 26 years of age and lived at Edinburgh Castle. His father was deceased.

Margaret Hadden or Richards was the widow of Harry Richards, a private in the Argyle [sic] and Sutherland Highlanders. She was recorded as 27 years old and lived at NO. 19 St John Street Edinburgh. Her parents were deceased, her father being recorded as Robert Hadden her mother's husband.

The marriage was recorded at Edinburgh on 28 November 1892.
