The 1851 census recorded John Quigley aged 3 years, and a scholar, living in Ecclefechan village with his parents and family. He had been born in Lockerbie.

In 1881 John J. Quigley was the head of a household in Ward Road, Dundee, that comprised eight persons including himself: John J. Quigley, Jane T. Quigley his wife, their three children, John's mother in law, and two visitors, Mary Duthie, a draper aged 27 years, and Annie Duthie, a milliner aged 24 years. Both visitors were born in St Vigeans, Forfarshire. John Jardine Quigley was a railway porter. He was 35 years of age and had been born in Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. ^{1 3}
