  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Dundee recorded a 'Jean King' aged 16 years, who had been born in Scotland but outside of Angus, and was living at Butterburn. She was a handloom weaver. She lived with (presumably) her father and mother, John and Jean King, and two sisters Mary and Margret King.

In 1851 Jean McGunagall was recorded by the census of that year, living in Dundee with her husband, William, and four lodgers at 44 West Port. All of the lodgers were surnamed King. Jean McGunagall was recorded as aged 25 years and born in Stirling.

The 1861 census for Liff Parish, Dundee, recorded William McGonagall, his wife Jean, their five children, and a lodger, Margaret King, living at 24 Mid Wynd. Jean McGonagall was recorded as being 30 years old and her birthplace was recorded as Stirling.

In 1871 the census for Dundee recorded Jean McGonagall and her husband and seven children living at 41 Step Row. Jean's age was recorded as 43 years and her birthplace as Stirling. Her children ranged from 20 years of age to 1 year.

Jean McGonnigal was recorded in the 1881 census for Dundee as a housewife. This is the first census of her married life that attributes an occupation to her. She is a housewife and her husband has become a poet. She lived then at 19 Paton's Land with her husband, six of their children, and 7 year old grandson, Andrew, her daughter, Margaret's son. The children ranged in age from 27 years to 14 years and all were unmarried. In actual fact William, the eldest, was more like 35 years old than 27 years. Jean's birthplace was noted as Stirlingshire.

The census of 1891 recorded Jane McGonegal living at 41 Paton's Land in Dundee with her husband, two of her sons and her grandson. Her sons, James and John, were recorded as being in their twenties and Andrew, her grandson, as 18 years old. Jane herself was recorded as 62 years old and as having been born in Stirling.

Jean McGonagall was recorded by the 1901 census for Edinburgh St Giles living with her husband and daughter, Mary, at 25 Potts Union Buildings. Her age was recorded as 76 years and her place of birth as Stirling.

Jane McGonigall, widow, who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of her husband's death before the registrar, W. F. Mallon, at Edinburgh on 30 September 1902 and made her X mark.

When Jane McGonnagal died in February 1911, her death certificate recorded her as widow of William McGonnagal Jute Weaver. Her recorded age at death was 71 years. Both of her parents, John King, a weaver, and Margaret Hume (?) were noted as deceased. 2 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
