The middle child of the five children listed was Joseph McGonagall. He was recorded as being 7 years old and his birthplace was recorded as Dundee.

In 1871 the census for Dundee recorded Joseph McGonagall living at 41 Step Row with his parents and six siblings. Joseph's age was recorded as 16 years and his birthplace as Dundee. He was a mill worker.
