  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Saint Peter's Parish, Dundee recorded Margret McGonigal (sic), aged in the 40-44 years age group, living at Hawkhill with (presumably) her husband, Charles, and seven children aged from 15 years to 9 months. She, like her husband and six of her children, had been born in Ireland.

Margret McGonagall was recorded by the 1861 census for Halkirk in Caithness, living with her husband, her daughter, Margret, and her granddaughter, Thomasina at Lower Westerdale. Her birthplace was noted as Maybole, Ayrshire, although the enumerator had first written Angus-shire. Margret's age was recorded as 67 years.

Margaret's husband, Charles, died in 1865 in Dundee. His death certificate recorded him as a weaver by trade, married to Margaret Maxwell. 'Margaret McGonagall', widow, who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of her husband's death before the registrar, James David, at Dundee on 19 October 1865 and made her X mark.

The 1871 census for St Clement, Dundee, recorded Margaret McGunagall, aged 74 years, living at 31 Dudhope Street with a 13 year old grandchild Thomasina Comming. Margaret was recorded as born in Maybole Ayrshire and was a widow. her granddaughter was born in Hallkirk Caithness and was a mill worker. Their dwelling had two windowed rooms.

When Margaret Maxwell died in 1872, her death certificate recorded her as a 'Pauper, Widow of Charles McGonegall Weaver'. Her recorded age there was 79 years. Both of her parents, named as Thomas Maxwell and Agnes Smith, were recorded as deceased.

When her son, William, died in Edinburgh in 1902, Margaret McGonigall was recorded in her son's death certificate as a 'Margaret McGonigal MS Maxwell deceased'. 2 3 4 5 7 8 9

PRESUMABLY

This word is being used with data from the 1841 census records because this particular census did not state specific family relations of any kind. What you draw from the information about relationships between the individuals, therefore, is inference.

  Medical Notes:

P. M. Baxter, Surgeon, certified the cause of death.

W. Dempster, an inmate of the Poor House where Margaret died, who was present where the death occurred, gave notice before the registrar, F. Macdiarmid, at Dundee on 12 November 1872. 3

Margaret married Charles McGONAGALL, son of Charles McGONAGALL and Nancy BAXTER.1 (Charles McGONAGALL was born about 1790 in Ireland 1 2 4 and died 18 October 1865 at 5.00 pm in 15 West Port, Dundee, Scotland 2 8.). The cause of his death was general decay.3
