  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Saint Peter's Parish, Dundee recorded a family of nine people named McGonigal, eight of whom were Irish born, and the youngest was born in the county where the census was taken, that is 'Forfarshire', the modern Angus. They were living at Hawkhill. The first named, Charles (abbreviated) McGonigal, presumably the father, was recorded as being aged in the 50-54 years age group. He was a handloom weaver and, as indicated above, he had been born in Ireland.

The 1861 census for Halkirk, Caithness recorded Charles McGonagall, aged 70 years, a pauper, living with his wife, his daughter, Margret, and his granddaughter, Thomasina, at Lower Westerdale. He was recorded as having been born in Edinburgh. (See Research Notes for his son William regarding change in birthplace between 1841 and 1851.)

Charles died in 1865 in Dundee. His death certificate recorded him as a weaver by trade, married to Margaret Maxwell. He was recorded as 74 years old at death. His parents, named as Charles McGonagall, a farmer, and Nancy McGonagall MS Baxter, were deceased.

When Margaret Maxwell died in 1872, her death certificate recorded her as a 'Pauper, Widow of Charles McGonegall Weaver'.

When his son, William, died in Edinburgh in 1902, Charles McGonigall was recorded in his son's death certificate as a 'Hand loom weaver deceased'. The same was recorded in the death certificate of his son, Charles McGonigill's death certificate of 1903. 2 4 5 6 7 8

HAWKHILL

Hawkhill, or The Hawkhill, in Dundee connected the West Port to the Perth Road. It runs from the city cemtre towards Perth. Once used for falconry, as the name suggests, before the industrial age, it later became a working class area with tenements, pubs and shops predominating. In the second half of the twentieth century the tenements were demolished and replaced with modern buildings. The University of Dundee bought up land in the area to aid its own expansion, and further demolition of older buildings took place. Now Hawkhill runs behind the Sports Centre. It has become a bypass for the University Campus.

HALKIRK

Halkirk, Caithness, is near Wick, in the extreme north of Scotland, about two hundred and forty miles from Dundee.

  Medical Notes:

The cause of death was certified by J. A. Couper MD.

Margaret McGonagall, widow, who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of her husband's death before the registrar, James David, at Dundee on 19 October 1865 and made her X mark. 4

Charles married Margaret MAXWELL, daughter of Thomas MAXWELL and Agnes SMITH (?).1 (Margaret MAXWELL was born about 1795 in Ireland 2 5 and died 10 November 1872 at 9.00 pm in Poor House, Dundee, Scotland.). The cause of her death was general debility.4
