  General Notes:

The 1861 census for Liff Parish, Dundee, recorded William McGonagall, his wife Jean, their five children, and a lodger, Margaret King, living at 24 Mid Wynd. The eldest girl of the five children was Margaret McGonagall. (Probably the person recorded in the 1851 census entry of her family inaccurately as Margaret King.) She was recorded as being 13 years old and her birthplace was recorded as Dundee. She was a millworker.

Margaret was not listed with her family in their 1871 or 1881 census entries.

In 1873 Margaret gave birth to a son, Andrew, at 19 Paton's Land, Dundee. She was the informant of the child's birth on 1 December 1873 and made her X mark. Her occupation was noted as a spinner in a jute mill. ^{1 2 3}
