The 1861 census for Liff Parish, Dundee, recorded William McGonagall, his wife Jean, their five children, and a lodger, "Margaret King", living at 24 Mid Wynd. The eldest of the five children was William McGonagall. (Probably recorded in the 1851 census entry for his family as William King.) He was recorded as being 15 years old and his birthplace was recorded as Dundee. William was a millworker.

In 1871 the census for Dundee recorded William McGonagall living at 41 Step Row with his parents and six siblings. William's age was recorded as 20 years and his birthplace as Dundee. He was a mill oiler.

William McGonnigal was recorded by the 1881 census for Dundee living at 19 Paton's Land with his parents, five siblings, and a nephew, Andrew. His age was noted as 27 years, a serious underestimate, and his birthplace as Dundee. He was a mill worker. 1 2 3
