   Other names for Isabella were HANIGAN, Isabella,³ HANNIGAN, Isabella,⁵ MACKINNIE, Isabella,¹ McININY, Isabella,⁵ McKENNY, Isabella, McKINNEY, Isabella, McKINNIE, Isabella,^{6 7} McKINNY, Isabella ^{4 7} and SMITH, Isabella.⁵

  General Notes:

Isabel and Thomas McKinny were sponsors to James, son of their brother James, and twin of Richard, at the baptism of the twins in 1838.

1861 Census:
Isabella Smith and her two families of children, along with some boarders, were living at 48 Allan Street in the parish of Rutherglen along with Isabella's second husband George Smith, who was head of the household. Their dwelling had two windowed rooms. George Smith, a coal miner, was recorded as aged 36 years and born in Ireland, as was Isabella, who was 37 years old. There were five sons and daughters: Mary, a cotton mill worker aged 18 years and born in Barrhead, and Ellen Hannigan, aged 13 years (actually about 15 years), born in Barony parish Glasgow, a carder in a cotton mill, from Isabella's first marriage; and Joseph, aged 4 years, Isabella, aged 2 years and Thomas, aged just 4 days, from her second. Joseph and Isabella were Glasgow born, Thomas was born in Rutherglen. Lastly the two boarders: Mary McKenna, aged 20 years, born in Barrhead, and like Ellen a carder in a cotton mill, and Thomas McKenna, aged 41 years, born in Ireland, and formerly a collier.
Note: Thomas McKenna (elsewhere McKinny) is probably Isabella's brother. Mary may be the daughter of Isabella's brother James and his wife Rosann McKinney.


In the 1871 census for Bothwell, Lanarkshire, both the family of George and Isabella Smith and that of William Watson and his wife Mary Hannigan, Isabella's daughter by her first husband, appear on the same page, that is they lived next to one another, the Smiths at number 17 and the Watsons at number 20.


In the marriage certificate of Helen Hannigan in 1873, her mother was recorded as 'Isabella Smith previously Hannigan MS McIniny'.


Isabella Smith died in 1893 at the recorded age of 64 years. She was the widow of 1st William Hannagan Stone Quarrier and 2nd George Smith Coal Miner. Her parents were deceased. ^{5 8 9}

Isabella's son, Joseph Smith, of Old (? unclear) Double Row, Aitkenhead, who had been present where his mother died, gave notice of her death before the registrar at Bothwell on 18 December 1893.

Isabella married William HANNAGIN, son of John HANAGAN and Rosann MULLIKIN, on 10 February 1843 in St John's RC Church, Prior Park, Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Glasgow.¹ (William HANNAGIN was born about 1819 in Ireland ¹⁰ and died between 1848 and 1851.)

Note: According to SCRAN "St. John's School (Barrhead) for Roman Catholics opened in 1912 under Mr Edward Gallagher of Eriskay at Prior Park beside the church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1841, on ground obtained with difficulty from a builder in financial difficulties. In 1841 there were over 2000 Catholics in Barrhead who previously had to travel to St. Mirin's in Paisley, (from)1808. The majority of these people were poor Irish labourers and their families. In 1941 St. John's was destroyed by fire..."
James Purcell was one of the first Irish priests in the 19th century to work in Scotland. In his brief four years in Barrhead he opened a school in Water Road, opened a cemetery, and built the presbytery.
