1851 Census: George and Isabella Smith lived at number 1 Provanhall in the parish of Shettleston, Lanarkshire. Both had been born in Ireland. Isabella was recorded as 25 years old, and George was 26 years old and worked as a coal miner. George had his two stepdaughters living in the household, Mary Hanagan who was 7 years old, and Ellen who was 2 years old. Mary had been born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, and Ellen was recorded as born in Shettleston, Lanarkshire. Mary was at school. Three others lived in the household. The first was Thomas McKenny, born in Ireland, 28 years old, and a coal miner. He was classed as a visitor. Another visitor was Steven Lennox, also Irish born and a coal miner, and aged 18 years. Thomas Campbell was the third. He was recorded as a lodger. Like the previous two he worked as a coal miner and was Irish born. He was 19 years old. Apart from George and Isabella, everyone else in the household was unmarried.
1861 Census: George Smith headed the household living at 52 Main Street Rutherglen. He was a coal miner, aged 36 years, who had been born in Ireland. His wife, Isabella Smith, widowed in a previous marriage to William Hannigan, lived with him. She was 37 years old and had also been born in Ireland. The rest of the household comprised three children of the present marriage, Joseph, 4 years old, Isabella, 2 years old, and 4 days' old Thomas Smith; two children of Isabella's first marriage, namely Mary and Ellen Hannigan, 18 and 13 years old respectively, and two boarders, Isabella's brother Thomas McKenna, aged 40 years, and (possibly his daughter) Mary McKenna, a single woman aged 20 years. Thomas, "formerally" a collier, was Irish born, but his daughter Mary had been born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire. The two elder Smith children were Glasgow born, the baby had been born in Rutherglen. Of the Hannigan girls, Mary was recorded as born in Barrhead, and Ellen was born in the Barony parish, Glasgow. Mary was a cotton mill worker by occupation, and Ellen was a carder in a cotton mill, as was Mary McKenna.
George married Isabella McKENNA, daughter of William McKENNA and Isabella McCUTCHEON, on 8 July 1849 in Barony Parish, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Isabella McKENNA was born about 1824 in Ireland 2 and died 17 December 1893 at 8.30 pm in 17 Double Row, Thornwood, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was heart disease over 4 months.
