George had his two stepdaughters living in the household, Mary Hanagan who was 7 years old, and Ellen who was 2 years old. Mary had been born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, and Ellen was recorded as born in Shettleston, Lanarkshire. Mary was at school. Three others lived in the household. 1861 Census:

His wife, Isabella Smith, widowed in a previous marriage to William Hannigan, lived with him. She was 37 years old and had also been born in Ireland. The rest of the household comprised three children of the present marriage, Joseph, 4 years old, Isabella, 2 years old, and 4 days' old Thomas Smith; two children of Isabella's first marriage, namely Mary and Ellen Hannigan, 18 and 13 years old respectively, and two boarders, Isabella's brother Thomas McKenna, aged 40 years, and (possibly his daughter) Mary McKenna, a single woman aged 20 years.
