1841 Census:
At Blary in the parish of Killchenzie, Argyll, were recorded James, Niell, Alexander and John McKendrick. All were born in the census county. The 1841 does not set out relationships. James was placed first and recorded as a farmer. Niell and Alexander were recorded as male servants. The age groupings they were placed in were James 45(to 49) years; Niell 40(to 44) years; Alexander 35(to 39) years; John, a child, was 3 years old.

Note: Although a search in the 1841 census was made for Alexander's wife Ann and daughter Sibby, nothing was found. The reason for this is open to debate. It may be that the whole of the area was not successfully enumerated for whatever reason.

1861 Census:
Alexander McKendrick was living as a member of the household of which his brother James was head, at Lower Blary in the parish of Killean and Kilchenzie. He and his brother James had been born in Kilchenzie, and Alexander's wife Ann and their children were born in Killean. Alexander was entitled the 'Farmer's Brother' and Ann the 'Farmer's Sister in law'. Alexander was recorded as 63 years of age and Ann as 48 years. The children were all unmarried: James, the eldest of those listed was 18 years old and was a ploughman. Margaret, aged 16 years, and Ann, aged 12 years, were domestic servants. Alexander aged 11 years was a herd. The three youngest children were Susan aged 9 years, Neil aged 7 years and Catharine aged 4 years.

Alexander was a labourer according to the marriage certificate of his daughter Sophia in 1863.

Alexander McKendrick, who had been present were the death of his brother James occurred, gave notice of the death before the registrar at Campbeltown on 10 July 1866.

1871 Census:
Alexander McKendrick was the head of the household living at Lagnacraig in Campbeltown Argyll. He was a shepherd born in Kilkenzie (sic), aged 72 years and married. The rest of the household comprised his wife Annie, aged 56 years, a shepherd's wife, born in Killean, and four of their children: Mary James Neil and Kate. All of these were born in Kilkenzie. Mary and Neil were domestic servants, Mary aged 28 years and Neil aged 15 years. Kate was 13 years. James was aged 26 years and like his father worked as a shepherd. Their dwelling had one windowed room.

In the marriage certificate of his daughter Mary Henderson in 1874, Alexander Henderson was recorded as a shepherd.

Alexander McKendrick, father of Alexander McKendrick junior and who had been present where young Alexander's death occurred, gave notice of his son's death before the registrar at Campbeltown on 8 October 1875 and made his X mark. In his son's death certificate Alexander was recorded as a shepherd.

1881 Census:
Alexander McKendrick, a shepherd aged 82 years, was head of the household, living at 21 Millknowe Terrace, Campbeltown, Argyll, comprising his wife Ann aged 70 years, his daughter Catherine aged 19 years, a nephew and niece George Clark, aged 10 years, and Ann McKendrick aged 2 years, and two boarders or lodgers, Thomas Price, aged 30 years, and Matthew Boyle aged 20 years. The latter two were born in Ireland, the others, except George, were all born in Argyll: Alexander in Kilchenzie, Ann and Catherine in Killean, George was born in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, and the small child Ann in Campbeltown. Alexander was noted as unemployed. His daughter was a 'shepherd's daughter', George was a scholar, and Ann a fisherman's daughter. The two Irishmen were labourers.
NOTE: There are two discrepancies here in the relationships recorded. This probably arose because a younger member of the family, in this case Catherine McKendrick is the likely one, has given to the enumerator the relationship that she, and not her father as head of the household, has to the individuals concerned. The two are: George Clark, born 1871 and son of Mary Henderson, and little Ann McKendrick, daughter of Catherine's sister Ann McKendrick, born 1879, her father being Walter McIntosh.

When Alexander McKendrick died in 1886 his recorded age at death was 86 years. He was also recorded as a farmer married to Ann McMillan. Both of his parents were deceased.

  Research Notes:

JACOBITE DEFEAT IN 1745

After the Jacobites were defeated in 1745 at Culloden, much that was culturally Scottish was abandoned or devalued, including tartan, kilts and plaids, and the gaelic tongue. Some wanted to, and did, refer to Scotland as 'North Britain'.

Surnames were part of all of this, being part of language use, and therefore in a gaelic form in western and northern Scotland. This is why Alexander McKendrick is also documented as Alexander Henderson, and Alexander Hendrie. 'Henry' is the root of his surname in both English and Gaelic. These variations are found wherever people emigrated, travelled to or fled from the western Highlands of Scotland.

The gaelic form of the surname is MacEanruig.

Alexander had no medical attendant when he died.

George Clark, Alexander's grandson, who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of Alexander's death before the registrar at Campbeltown on 29 March 1886. ⁵

Alexander married Ann McMILLAN, daughter of James McMILLAN and Mary McMURCHY, on 17 November 1835 in Killean and Kilchenzie Parish, Argyll, Scotland.^{1 2} (Ann McMILLAN was baptised on 6 June 1812 in Killean and Kilchenzie Parish, Argyll, Scotland ¹³ and died 2 March 1899 at 3.30 pm in Millknowe Terrace, Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland ¹⁴.). The cause of her death was old age and debility.⁵
