General Notes:
Old Parish Register Campbeltown parish Argyll Baptisms
"May 1757 John Don mcKendrick & Margaret mcEacharn natural son 20"
Note:The baptism record entered here for John is circumstantial, that is it is at the right time and place and is the most 'suitable' in the records, having nothing that clashes with the names etc of the family. It does not, however, have other documentation that becomes a linking factor, to say this was definitely this John McKendrick. This is true therefore for the parents' and grandparents' names entered for John. More evidence may emerge. For the time being the family beyond John should be treated as somewhat uncertain.
In the baptism records of his children in the 1790s, John McKendrick and his wife Sibby Kelly are referred to as being at Killocraw farm. The modern address of Killocraw farm is 'Killowcraw Farm, Bellochantuy, Campbeltown, Argyll PA28 6QE'. It is south from Tayinloan along the A83 towards Kilchenzie, which in turn is about five miles further south of the farm itself.
When John McKendrick's son Donald died in 1857, John was already deceased. He was recorded in the death certificate as a farmer. His daughter Flora also died in that year and the same information was noted in her death certificate.
In 1880 when his son James died, and in 1886 when his son Alexander died, John McKendrick was recorded on their death certificates as a farmer and deceased. 2 3
Research Notes:
OTHER FAMILY AT KILLOCRAW
The baptism and marriage records point to there being other McKendrick families living and working at Killocraw in Killean and Kilchenzie parish. As far is known John and Sibby's childbearing began in 1778 and ended in 1802.
1 10 children born in Killean and Kilchenzie parish between 1766 and 1792, father Magnus McKendrick or variation. Some of them, perhaps all (needs checked) from Killocraw. Their names: Betty, Archibald, Margaret, Donald, John, Iver, Florrence Some sources say Magnus McKendrick went to North Carolina USA with some of his family at the end of the century.
2 8 children born in the parish father Archibald, between 1767 and 1784. Another, probably next generation born 1818. Their names: Alexander, John, Archibald, Flora, Cathrine, Ronald, Ann
These may be older brothers of John McKendrick, or possibly cousins, that is they have the same father or their fathers were brothers.
John married Sibby KELLY. (Sibby KELLY was born about 1760.)
