1911 Census:
There is only one William Rattray recorded in Renfrewshire in this census between the ages od 3 and 5 years. This is a child of 4 years of age, termed an 'inmate', living in an institution in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire. Other young people are recorded who are between the ages of 4 years and 21 years, but mainly under 15 years, called inmates. William, unlike the majority, was not yet at school. The only other piece of information offered is that he was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire. 2 4

  Research Notes:

KILMACOLM

Although this particular page of the 1911 census does not name it specifically, there is no doubt that William was an 'inmate' of what we now know as Quarrier's Village in Kilmacolm. Then it was known as one of the Orphan Homes of Scotland. It was founded in 1876 by William Quarrier, a Glasgow shoemaker and philanthropist. 5

William married Jane Josephine BRENNAN, daughter of Patrick BRENNAN and Jane ADAMS, on 11 May 1940 in St Patrick's RC Church, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 (Jane Josephine BRENNAN was born about 1913 and died on 21 October 2006 6.)
