   Cause of his death was apoplexy over 1 year and senility over 2 years.3

  General Notes:

William Rattray was a fish salesman according to William Rattray junior's birth certificate in 1877 and also according to the death certificate of his daughter Polina in 1894.

W. Rattray, widower, of Renfrew, gave notice of his wife, Esther's death before the registrar at Paisley on 11 June 1888. He was recorded as being a fish dealer.

1891 Census:
In this first census after the death of his wife, William Rattray was recorded living at 519 St George's Road Milton Glasgow, in the home of his older sister Jane Martin. Jane was 39 years old and worked as a seamstress. Her son, James, an apprentice engine maker, lived there too. William Rattray was a fish dealer by trade, and was 36 years old. His one year old son, Edward, probably by Elizabeth Boyle whom he had married in 1888, also lived in the household.

Another entry in the 1891 census recorded Elizabeth Rattray, a 'fish dealer's wife', being held as a prisoner in the North Prison at Glasgow Cathedral Square in the city. Her age was noted as 35 years.

William Rattray died in 1931 at the recorded age of 77 years. He was an 'Iron Moulder married to 1st Esther Charnley 2nd Elizabeth Boyle 3rd Alice Terry'. His parents were deceased.

In the death certificate of his son, William, in 1943 William Rattray's occupation was reported as 'Ironmoulder'. 3 4 5 6

W. W. Fyfe MD certified the causes of death.

Alice Rattray, widow, who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of William's death before the registrar at Johnstone on 23 November 1931 and made her X mark. 3


William married Esther CHARNLEY, daughter of Joseph CHARNLEY and Paulina Wadsworth ASHTON, on 5 October 1875 in 9 Hopetoun Place, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Esther CHARNLEY was born about 1855 4 and died 9 June 1888 at 8.30 am in Paisley Infirmary, Renfrewshire, Scotland 4.). The cause of her death was double pneumonia over 14 days.3


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. The minister was David Menzies, minister of Free Martyrs, Glasgow, and the witnesses David Rattray and Emma Charnley.

The bridegroom was 21 years old and worked as a journeyman flesher. He was a single man who lived at 160 Cumberland Street (South) Glasgow.

Esther Charnley was a flesher saleswoman of 20 years of age. She lived at 158 Cumberland Street and was single.

The marriage was registered on 8 October 1875. 1

William next married Elizabeth BOYLE in 1888.2 (Elizabeth BOYLE was born about 1855 and died in 1908.)


William next married Alice TERRY. (Alice TERRY was born about 1855.)
