   Cause of his death was typhus fever over 13 days.7

   Other names for James were McGONAGLE, James,3 8 9 McGONEGAL, James,10 McGONNIGAL, James 6 and McGUNAGILL, James.7

  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Largs Ayrshire recorded James McGonnigal living with his family at Allan's Land in Gateside Street. He had been born in Ireland and was 12 years of age. He was a scholar.

James McGonigal was the head of the household living at No 38 Dundyvan in the western district of Old Monkland parish in 1871 when the census was taken. he lived there with his wife and five children. He was 33 years of age and worked as a blast furnace filler. He had been born in Ireland.

The death certificate of 1875 of James McGunagill recorded him as a furnaceman, married to Mary Lafferty, and aged 38 years. His father was deceased.

In 1900, William McGonagle, a son of James, died at the recorded age of 35 years. James McGonagle was recorded in the death certificate as a blast furnaceman. 5 6 7 8

  Medical Notes:

The cause of death was certified by Samuel Smith LRCPetc of 248 Great East Road.

The informant of the death was Thomas Murray, brother in law of the deceased of 30 Clyde Iron Works, who had not been present where the death occurred. He gave notice before William Brown, registrar, at Swinton, Bailieston on 8 October 1875. 7


James married Mary LAFFERTY, daughter of William LAFFERTY and Helen WATERS, on 5 June 1860 in St Paul's RC parish, Shettleston, Glasgow, Scotland.1 2 3 (Mary LAFFERTY was born in 1836 in Ireland 2 5 11 and died before 20 June 1900 8.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. P. McLaughlin, pastor of St Paul's RC Church Eastmuir, presided. The witnesses were John Harkin and Margaret McGonigal.

James McGonigal was aged 22 and a farm servant. He was a single man who lived in South Hutchison (?) parish of New Kilpatrick. His father was deceased.

Mary Lafferty was 23, and also of the parish of New Kilpatrick. She was a domestic servant and unmarried.

The marriage was registered on 6 June 1860 at Shettleston, Andrew Garrand being the registrar. 2
