  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Largs in Ayrshire recorded Duncan McGonnigal and his family living at Allan's Land in Gateside Street. Duncan was Irish born and aged 50 years according to this census. He worked as a labourer. With Duncan lived his wife Mary, his daughter Mary and her husband, and four other children ranging in age from 6 years to 18 years. All were born in Ireland.

Duncan was a labourer by occupation according to the 1860 marriage certificate of his son James.

In the same son's death certificate of 1875 Duncan was recorded as having been a farm labourer. ^{1 2 3}

Duncan married Mary BROWN, daughter of James BROWN and Ann COYLTON. (Mary BROWN was born in 1804 in Ireland ^{4 5} and died 26 July 1877 at 4.40 pm in Gateside Street, Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland ⁴.). The cause of her death was chronic gastro enteritis over some months.
