  General Notes:

The 1871 census for Old Monkland parish recorded Mary McGonigal living with her husband and five children at Dundyvan in the western district of the parish. She was aged 34 years and had been born in Ireland.

Mary McCann was recorded by the 1881 census living with her second husband, her children, and 2 boarders in Hamilton. Her birthplace was Ireland and her age was recorded as 42 years.

In 1900 Mary's son William died. In his death certificate Mary was recorded as ' Mary McCann previously McGonagle Maiden Surname Lafferty'. She was deceased by then. 7 8 9


Mary married James McGONIGAL, son of Duncan McGONNIGAL and Mary BROWN, on 5 June 1860 in St Paul's RC parish, Shettleston, Glasgow, Scotland.1 2 3 (James McGONIGAL was born in 1838 in Ireland 2 8 11 and died 6 October 1875 at 0.15 am in 6 Clyde Iron Works, Old Monkland West, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of his death was typhus fever over 13 days.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. P. McLaughlin, pastor of St Paul's RC Church Eastmuir, presided. The witnesses were John Harkin and Margaret McGonigal.

James McGonigal was aged 22 and a farm servant. He was a single man who lived in South Hutchison (?) parish of New Kilpatrick. His father was deceased.

Mary Lafferty was 23, and also of the parish of New Kilpatrick. She was a domestic servant and unmarried.

The marriage was registered on 6 June 1860 at Shettleston, Andrew Garrand being the registrar. 2

Mary next married James McCANN on 4 December 1877 in Shettleston, Glasgow, Scotland.4 (James McCANN was born in 1840 in Ireland.)
