General Notes: The 1881 census for Hamilton recorded James and Mary McCann, their family and 2 boarders, living at 26 Store Row. James, the head of the family, worked as a labourer in an iron works. His age was recorded as 40 and his birthplace as Ireland. In his family there were 7 step-children and and 3 sons. The 2 boarders were Daniel Boyle aged 2 and born in Largs Ayrshire, and John Harkins, an iron work labourer aged 25 born in Old Monkland parish and unmarried. 3 James married Mary TONNER on 9 January 1860 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Mary TONNER was born about 1840 and died before 4 December 1877.) James next married Mary LAFFERTY, daughter of William LAFFERTY and Helen WATERS, on 4 December 1877 in Shettleston, Glasgow, Scotland.2 (Mary LAFFERTY was born in 1836 in Ireland 3 4 5 and died before 20 June 1900 6.) |
