  General Notes:

John was baptised by Fr T. O'Meara in 1838. He was recorded as the lawful son of Hugh McGonigle and Sarah Coyle. His godparents were Peter Tierney and Mary McLaughlin.

John was 3 years old when recorded by the 1841 census. He had been born in Lanarkshire and lived in that county with his parents and sister at 2 Main Streey, Anderston, Glasgow.

The 1851 census recorded John living with his parents and brother William, and a lodger, at 156 Main Street in the Gorbals parish of Glasgow. John was aged 12 and a scholar. His birthplace was noted as Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

John was not included in the 1861 census entry for his family.

In 1871 John McGunnigal and his family were recorded by the census for Forfar living at 449A East Back Wynd, Forfar. John was noted as aged 32, a journeyman tailor and born in Glasgow. 2 3 4 7 8

John married Mary FULTON, daughter of Thomas FULTON and Mary ROBERTSON, on 2 November 1863 in 117 East High Street, Forfar, Scotland.1 (Mary FULTON was born about 1843 in Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland 1 7 and died in 1912 5.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was enacted after banns according to the forms of the United Presbyterian Church. The minister was Peter Wright. The witnesses were Margret (sic) Langlands and John L. Fenton.

John MacGunagall, who made his X mark, was an unmarried man of 24 years. He lived at 117 East High Street Forfar. He was a journeyman tailor by occupation. His father was deceased.

Mary Fulton was unmarried and aged 20 years. She too lived at 11 East High Street Forfar. No occupation was noted for her.

The marriage was registered on 3 November 1863 at Forfar, the registrar being John Webster. 1
