General Notes:
The 1841 census for Anderston, Glasgow recorded Hugh as head of a household that comprised himself, his wife, Sarah, and their two children, living at 2 Main Street. Hugh was recorded as being in the 25-29 years age group. He was a tailor by trade, and had been born in Ireland.
In 1851 Hugh McGonegal (sic) was recorded by the 1851 census living with his wife Sarah, his son John, and his son William, at 156 Main Street Gorbals, Glasgow. In addition a lodger, Ann Dasley [aged 37 years, a power loom weaver, born in Ireland] lived with the family. Hugh was recorded as aged 46 years and was a tailor by occupation. His birthplace was Ireland.
Note: this age is quite disparate to the one given in the 1841 census, and would make Hugh's birth year as early as 1804. Conversely, the 1841 census date may be an error.
On 21 February 1857 Hugh McGonigal was discharged from the 91st Foot invalid depot at Chatham with no claim to pension. He was noted as born in Londonderry and was by trade a tailor.
APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF
In 1859 Hugh McGonnigle applied for parish relief. His application No 69626 was made at 11.40 am on 14 July 1859. His address was noted as 78 Saltmarket, far right stair, two stairs up, left door. His country of birth was recorded as Ireland, and specifically County Derry. The inspector's visit to Hugh's home took place the next day, 15 July 1859, at 12.10 pm. Hugh was recorded as being married and aged 45 years, and by occupation a tailor. At the time he was partially disabled by ill health.
His dependants were recorded as his wife Sarah Coyle, aged 49 years, who was born in Ireland, and William aged 9 and a half years, born in 156 Main Street, Gorbals, not seen by the inspector. Hugh had been ill for eight weeks and off work six weeks. When working he could earn 12/- to 15/- weekly. About Sarah, the inspector wrote 'Wife does nothing.'
This application was Hugh's first. The Settlement was Ireland.
On 17 June 1862 an additional record was made to Hugh's Parish Relief Application. 'Wm going out as apprentice to John Ferguson Tailor, 23 Centre Street, requires clothing.'
The application was signed by the inspector, Robert C. Shaw.

Note: taken with information from other sources this list of residences is confusing and seemingly inaccurate.
When the 1861 census for Glasgow recorded them Hugh McGonigle, his wife Sarah, and son William, were in the City Parish Poorhouse at 326 Parliamentary Street Glasgow. Hugh's age was recorded as 41 years. He was a tailor and had been born in Ireland.

It may be that he himself did not know his exact age.
In his death certificate of 1863 Hugh McGonigle was recorded as a pauper, a tailor, and married. His age was noted as 49 years. No parental information was provided in the certificate.
In November 1863 Hugh's son John married in Forfar. In his marriage certificate his father was recorded as 'Hugh MacGunagall tailor deceased'.
Hugh's son William was married in 1871. In his marriage certificate Hugh was recorded as 'Hugh McGonnigal tailor (journeyman) deceased'. 2 3 4 5 6 8 10 11

The 91st Regiment of Foot seems to have included the Donegal Light Infantry and Argyllshire Regiment of Foot.

The informant of Hugh's death was John McPherson, the Poorhouse Governor's clerk, who gave notice before the registrar, Archibald Hood, at Glasgow on 23 March 1863. 6

Hugh married Sarah COYLE, daughter of James KYLE and Mary KYLE, on 21 January 1837 in St Andrew's RC Chapel, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Sarah COYLE was born about 1815 in Lifford, County Donegal, Ireland 2 3 4 and died 20 October 1865 at 5.00 am in Poor House, Forfar, Scotland 2 8 9 10.). The cause of her death was general debility over months.
