In 1861 John Shearer and his wife Martha were living in Duff Street in Keith parish, Banffshire. A boarder Margaret Grant, aged 15 years, was living with them, and a visitor named John Ronnie.
The 1871 census recorded John Shearer, 86 years, and Martha Shearer, aged 82 years, living at the home of their son in law, James Chalmers and his family, in Bridge Street, Strichen, Aberdeenshire.
When Martha died in 1871 her death certificate recorded her as married to John Shearer, a retired farmer. Her age age at death was 81 years. Both of her parents were deceased. 2 3 4

The deceased woman's son in law, James Chalmers, who had been present where she died, gave notice of her death on 9 December 1871 at Strichen.
