  Marriage Notes:

"He (Alexander Gordon) married (contract 7 October 1706, and 5 February 1707 ) Henrietta Mordaunt, daughter of Charles, Earl of Peterborough and Monmouth. She was a woman of much energy and ability. She introduced many agricultural improvements in the north, even bringing down from England English ploughs, with men to work them. At her husband's death she found herself in charge of a large and young family ; she determined to bring them up in the Protestant faith. For this the General Assembly in 1730 sent her a cordial letter of thanks, and the Government in 1735 settled upon her a pension of £1000 a year. This, it is said, was withdrawn in 1745, because she set out a breakfast on the roadside for Prince Charles Edward when he passed her park gates on his way to England. She survived her husband for many years, dying 11 October 1760 at Prestonhall, near Edinburgh, which she had purchased in 1738, and which she left to her son Adam. By her the Duke had issue:

1. Alexander, an infant son, buried at Pulham, 7 January 1711.

2. Cosmo George, third Duke of Gordon.

3. Charles, a captain in the Earl of London's Foot (54th Regiment) in 1745, disbanded in 1748. He was a lieutenant in the 89th Regiment 13 October 1759. Died at Bainfield, Edinburgh, 26 April 1780, unmarried. Testament confirmed 29 September 1790

4. Lewis, entered the Navy, but threw in his lot with the Pretender in 1745 ; raised a regiment in his cause, and defeated the royalist troops under Macleod near Inveraray 23 December 1745, and then marched to Perth. He escaped from Culloden, went to France, and died at Montreuil, 15 July 1754.

5. Adam, was born about 1726, entered the Army as cornet in the Scots Greys 1743, and had a distinguished military career...... When commanding in Scotland, he resided in Holyrood Palace, which he had repaired and redecorated ; it is said he had all the old oak carvings painted white. He resigned his command in 1798, and retired to his seat of The Burn, in Kincardineshire, where lie died suddenly 13 August 1801, and was buried at Inveresk 25 August. Lord Adam married, in London, 2 September 1767, Jane, daughter of John Drummond of Megginch, and widow of James, second Duke of Atholl. By her, who died at Holyrood 22 February 1795, and was buried at Inveresk, he had no issue. By his will, dated 20 March 1795, he left his property to a natural daughter.

6. Henrietta, died unmarried at Brompton 14 February 1789, aged eighty-one. She was buried in Fulham Churchyard.

7. Mary, died unmarried at Edinburgh 26 July 1782.

8. Anne, married, as his third wife, to William, second Earl of Aberdeen, with issue, and died at Edinburgh 22 June 1791, aged seventy-eight.

9. Elizabeth, married to the Rev. John Skelly, a clergyman of the Church of England in the diocese of Durham, and died 1769, leaving issue.

10. Jean, died unmarried at Edinburgh 17 January 1792, and was buried at Holyrood in the Drummond burying- place 20 January. Will 8 June 1792.

11. Catherine, married, 12 September 1745, to. the Hon. Francis Charteris, afterwards seventh (attainted) Earl of Wemyss. She died at Edinburgh 21 January 1786, leaving issue.

12. Charlotte."
