  Marriage Notes:

"The Duke of Gordon married, in October 1676, Elizabeth Howard, second daughter of Henry, Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Norwich, with a portion of £1200 a year. The marriage does not appear to have been a happy one, as the Duchess retired to a convent in Flanders before 1697, in which year the Duke raised an action of adherence against her. She ultimately obtained a decree of separation from him in 1707. Her name was at one time prominently brought into notice by her presenting to the Faculty of Advocates a medal with the head of the Pretender on one side and a representation of the British Isles on the other, with the motto Reddite. It was at first, by the influence of James Dundas of Arniston, received with thanks, but afterwards, on the Government taking notice of the incident, rejected with a resolution protesting the devotion of the Faculty to the reigning sovereign. The Duchess survived her husband many years, and died at the Abbeyhill, Edinburgh, 16 July 1732. Testament confirmed 17 December 1733. She was buried in Elgin Cathedral. By her the Duke had issue"
