   Another name for George was GAIRDYNE, George, capitan.2

  General Notes:

from House of Gordon

  Research Notes:

On 25 October 1639, a formal meeting of verification took place regarding the family and birth details of
"capitan George Gairdyne, now residen in Germanie." The details, that were "cleirlie verefeit and provin" from the testimony of trusted witnesses, were as follows:
1
George was the lawful son of the deceased "Alexr Gairdyn of Banchorie" and his wife "Jonet Straquhyn"
2
Alexr Gairdyn was the lawful son of the deceased "Arthure Gairdyn of Banchorie"
3
Arthure Gairdyn of Banchorie was the lawful son of "George Gairdyn of Banchorie"
4
The mother of Alexr Gairdyn was Elspet Gordon, daughter to George Gordon "of Gicht"
5
The mother of Elspet Gordon was Elizabeth Gordon, daughter to the Laird of Lesmoir
6
Arthure Gairdyn's mother was "Issobell Keyth", daughter to the Laird of Troup, lawful son of "the Erll Marshall"
7
Jonet Straquhyn's mother was Jonet Forbes, daughter to James Forbes of Brux
8
Jonet Straquhyn's grandmother was "Mariorie Forbes", daughter of Lord Forbes
9
The Laird of Glenkindie's mother was "Issobell Stewart", daughter to the "laird of Latheris", who himself was descended from the house of Innermeath

Note: These statements, despite the assurance of those present in 1639, should not be accepted without question.
To be questioned are:
A]
detail No 4 above, by date it would seem apt to choose the 2nd laird of Gight, George, as the father of Elspet, mother of Alexander garden. The scholar, J.M.Bulloch, lists Elspet as a daughter of the 4th laird of Gight, John, who by the vagaries of inheritance was also a son of the 1st laird, William;
B]
detail No 5 above, the parentage of the grandmother of Alexander Garden, Elizabeth Gordon. For this see Elizabeth Gordon, wife of George Gordon 2nd of Gight in this database. Again, Gordon scholarship suggests the father of Elizabeth was Robert Gordon of Fetterletter, son of the 1st laird of Haddo;
C]
detail No 6 above, the question of whether "Issobell Keyth" was the mother of Arthur Garden. This is addressed in the Marriage Notes on the wife of George Garden of Banchory q.v.;
D]
detail No 7 above, that "Jonet Forbes" was the daughter of "James Forbes of Brux". There was no laird of Brux by that name, as far as this researcher is aware, although there were some by that name of Brux family descent. The woman who married the laird of Glenkindie seems to have been the daughter of Alexander Forbes, laird of Brux.
E}
detail No 9 above, which names William's Strachan's mother as Issobell Stewart.
The Strachans of Glenkindie mentions this name but only when quoting the Birth Brieve itself. The name assigned to Janet Strachan's grandmother in that text is Bessie Stuart, though it's not impossible that both names applied to the same woman in different circumstances. 1 2 3 4
