" .... the Master married Margaret, daughter of Malcolm, Lord Fleming (receipt for tocher dated 6 January 1546-47), who, after his death, married, secondly, Thomas, Master of Erskine, and, thirdly, John, fourth Earl of Atholl, Chancellor of Scotland .... The only issue of the Master's marriage was a posthumous son, John, third Earl of Montrose ...."

Margaret next married Sir Thomas ERSKINE Master of Erskine, Commendator of Dryburgh, son of Sir John ERSKINE 5th Lord Erskine, 17th Earl of Mar and Margaret CAMPBELL, 30 January 1548(1549)(contract).1 3 (Sir Thomas ERSKINE Master of Erskine, Commendator of Dryburgh was born about 1517 and died soon after 7 October 1551(dvp) 3.)


  Marriage Notes:

"He (Thomas Erskine) married (contract 30 January 1548-49) Margaret, daughter of Malcolm, third Lord Fleming, and widow of Robert, Lord Graham, who fell at Pinkie, but by her had no issue. He had a natural son Adam, Commendator of Cambuskenneth, and a daughter (by a Jonet Abernethy) Elizabeth, married (contract 29 January 1562-63) to Robert Graham of Gartmore, brother of John, Earl of Menteith."

Margaret next married John STEWART 4th Earl of Atholl, Lord Chancellor, son of John STEWART 3rd Earl of Atholl and Grizel RATTRAY, 1 April 1557(contract).1 4 (John STEWART 4th Earl of Atholl, Lord Chancellor was born about 1533, died on 24 April 1579 4 and was buried in 1579 in St Giles Church, Edinburgh, Scotland 4.). The cause of his death was poisoning.


  Marriage Notes:

"He (John Stewart) is said to have married .... secondly (contract dated 1 April 1557), Margaret Fleming, daughter of Malcolm, third Lord Fleming, and relict both of Robert, Master of Montrose, and Thomas, Master of Erskine. She was believed to have the powers of incantation, and at the birth of James VI. cast the pains of childbirth from the Queen on to Lady Rires. Queen Mary on the Earl of Atholl's death writes to her as 'My good anti.'"
