STEWART, John 5th Earl of Atholl 1General Notes: John was the last of the Stewart Earls of Atholl. With royal permission John's son in law William Murray was to inherit the Atholl title, but upon his sudden death after he had resigned as earl of Tullibardine, John Stewart's grandson John Murray, son of John's daughter Dorothea and William Murray, became John Murray, 1st Earl of Atholl. 2 John married Mary RUTHVEN, daughter of William RUTHVEN 4th Lord Ruthven, Earl of Gowrie and Dorothea STEWART, on 24 January 1580.1 (Mary RUTHVEN was born about 1563.) |
