  Research Notes:

"My grandfather was a driver for British Railways. His usual route was down around the Borders since, being a family man living in Edinburgh, this allowed him to get home every night. Every once in a while, however, he had to fill in for someone driving the famous Flying Scotsman down to London."

"My grandfather was in the Cameron Highlanders Band. At the front, he was a runner, carrying messages from trench to trench. The medal at the left in photo is the 1914 Star (aka the Mons Star) shown by the bar on the ribbon, meaning that he was in the thick of things early on. The brass box was a Christmas 1914 gift from the Princess Royal, given to every soldier at that time. "
