Catherine Sandilands was recorded by the 1841 census living at 6 Newport Street, Edinburgh, with four (possible) siblings, and an older woman, Isabella Sandilands, and a young child of 2 years, Alexander Nisbet. Her birth county was Midlothian and her age in the 20-24 years range. No occupation was recorded for her.
The 1851 census for Kirkliston in West Lothian recorded Catherine Taylor living in Kirkliston Village with her husband, John Taylor, and their small baby son aged 11 months. She was 34 years of age and had been born in Edinburgh. As well as the small Taylor family, two male lodgers in their twenties lived in the household, Thomas Murray and John Shiels. The entry records that Catherine was formerly a cook.
In 1861 Catherine Taylor was recorded living at 147 Cowgate in the Edinburgh Old Greyfriars parish, in the registration District of St Giles, according to the census of that year. Two young men lodged in the household, Charles Johnston, 19 years old, and John McAlley, 23 years old. In addition Catherine had two children to care for, aged 11 years and 7 years. Catherine was 43 years of age and had been born in Edinburgh.
Catherine Taylor was living with her husband, two children and one lodger at 147 Cowgate Edinburgh in 1871, according to the census of that year. Her age was recorded as 54 years and her birthplace as Edinburgh.
Catherine Sandilands was widowed on 26 September 1874.
Catherine Taylor, now a widow, was recorded as head of the household in the census of 1881 for the civil parish of Edinburgh St Giles. She was recorded as 66 years of age, and still lived at 147 Cowgate, Edinburgh. With her lived her daughter, Jessie, and two lodgers in their thirties, Charles Johnston and John Ferguson.
Catherine Taylor continued to live at 147 Cowgate into the 1891 census for Edinburgh St Giles. Her age was recorded then as 74 years and she was head of the household that consisted of herself, her daughter, Jessie, and Charles Johnston, a long term lodger. Her birthplace was Edinburgh.
When Catherine Taylor died in 1895 her death certificate recorded her as the widow of John Taylor, maltman, and her recorded age at death was 77 years. Her parents were deceased. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

The ages recorded for Catherine Sandilands in the various census returns, and in her death certificate, can be listed as follows: 1841 gives her age as 20 to 24 years so giving a birth year as between 1817 and 1821 1851 gives her age as 34 years so giving a birth year of 1816-1817 1861 gives her age as 43 years so giving a birth year of 1817-1818 1871 gives her age as 54 years so giving a birth year of 1816-1817 1881 gives her age as 61 years so giving a birth year of 1819-1820 1891 gives her age as 74 years so giving a birth year of 1816-1817 1895 gives her age as 77 years so giving a birth year of 1817-1818.
This is less erratic than the recorded ages of her brother James and means we can not be far wrong in putting her birth years at 1817-1818.

James Taylor, Catherine's son, of 4 Prince Albert Buildings, was the informant of her death. He gave notice before the registrar, Thomas Temple, at Edinburgh on 28 January 1895.
Catherine married John TAYLOR, son of James TAYLOR and Margaret THORNTON, on 25 December 1848 in Saint Cuthbert's parish, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (John TAYLOR was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland 2, baptised on 3 May 1818 in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland 8 and died 26 September 1874 at 10.30 pm in 147 Cowgate, Edinburgh, Scotland 7.). The cause of his death was bronchitis over 3 weeks.1
