  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Kirkliston in West Lothian recorded John Taylor as head of a household living in Kirkliston Village. John Taylor was a married man with a small baby son. He was 33 years of age and had been born in Bathgate. As well as the small Taylor family two male lodgers in their twenties lived in the household, Thomas Murray and John Shiels.

In 1861 John Taylor was recorded as head of the household living at 147 Cowgate in Edinburgh Old Greyfriars parish in the registration District of St Giles, according to the census of that year. He worked as a labourer in a brewery, as did two young men who lodged in the household, Charles Johnston, 19, and John McAlley, 23. John Taylor's family consisted of his wife and two children. John himself was 43 years of age and had been born in Bathgate.

John Taylor was living with his family and one lodger, Charles Johnston, in 147 Cowgate Edinburgh in 1871 according to the census of that year. His age was recorded as 53 years and his birthplace as Linlithgow. He worked as a maltman.

John Taylor died in 1874. His death certificate recorded him as a maltman, married to Catherine Sandilands. His recorded age at death was 56 years. Both his parents were deceased.

James Taylor, John's son, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, Dan Beatson, at Edinburgh on 28 September 1874. 4


John married Catherine SANDILANDS, daughter of Alexander SANDILANDS Blacksmith and Isabel SCOTT, on 25 December 1848 in Saint Cuthbert's parish, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Catherine SANDILANDS was born about 1817 in Edinburgh, Scotland 1 2 7 and died 26 January 1895 at 10 pm in 147 Cowgate, Edinburgh, Scotland 1.). The cause of her death was senile debility.4
