Janet married David CRICHTON of Naughton, son of Sir Patrick CRICHTON of Cranston-Riddell and Unknown, before 11 March 1540(1541).1 2 (David CRICHTON of Naughton was born about 1500 and died about 1553 1 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Janet (Leslie), styled sister of David Pantar, Bishop of Ross, and therefore the daughter of Margaret Crichton (see Note below). She was married to David Crichton of Naughton, before 11 March 1540-41, when Sir Peter Crichton of Naughton, David, his grandson, and Janet Leslie, David's wife, had a tack in feufarm of the lands of Bogy and others. David Crichton died about 1553, and on 6 January 1553-54 the nonentry duties were gifted to David, Bishop of Ross, who, on 25 January, regranted them to his 'lovit sister,' Janet Leslie, relict of David Crichton .... She died at Kirkcaldy 17 December 1591."

from Scots Peerage (vol 7)

Note:

Historical Records of the Family of Leslie states very clearly that Janet Leslie was the daughter of George Leslie, Earl of Rothes, and Agnes Somerville. She was a full sister of Andrew, the fifth Earl, James, John, Peter and Helen Leslie.

The annulment of George Leslie's marriage to Margaret Crichton left them free to marry but did not de-legitimise their children, who are specifically named in the text as Norman, Master of Rothes, and William Leslie of Cairny.

The term 'lovit sister' cannot be taken as evidence of a full blood, or even a half-blood, relationship. Margaret Crichton remarried George Leslie, and so her children and his children would have been in a familial-, but not necessarily in a blood-relationship with one another, as would be the case with 'blended families' in modern times.

Janet next married John GRANT 4th of Freuchie,'the Gentle', son of James GRANT 3rd of Freuchie 'the Bold' and Elizabeth FORBES, Before 8 March 1557(charter).1 3 (John GRANT 4th of Freuchie,'the Gentle' was born about 1508 and died on 3 June 1585 3.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Janet (Leslie) .... was married, secondly, before 15 May 1557, to John Grant of Freuchie, who died in 1585, and whom she survived"

from Scots Peerage (vol 7)

"After remaining a widower for about two years, the Laird (John Grant of Freuchie) took a second wife, Lady Janet Leslie, daughter of the Earl of Rothes, who was herself a widow. The marriage was celebrated before 8th March 1557, as on that date John Grant of Freuchie and Janet Leslie, his spouse, received a Crown charter of the lands of Mulben. Lady Janet Leslie appears to have been the widow of the Laird of Naughton in Fife,as she is designed 'Lady Jeane Leslie, Lady of Naughton,' in a seventeen years' lease granted to her by.Robert Pitcairn, Commendator of Dunfermline, of the teindsheaves of Bogie, Bennochie, Smeatoun, and Balsusnie, in the shire of Fife, dated in the year 1568. She had apparently the liferent of these lands. Lady Janet Leslie survived her second husband, and married again as her third husband, before 8th August 1590, James Elphinstone, brother-german of Robert, third Lord Elphinstone. But she did not long survive her third marriage, having died in Kirkcaldy on 17th December 1591."

from Chiefs of Grant 2 3

Janet next married James ELPHINSTONE, son of Alexander ELPHINSTONE 2nd Lord Elphinstone and Catherine ERSKINE, before 6th August 1587.1 2 (James ELPHINSTONE was born about 1536.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Janet (Leslie) .... married .... as her third husband, before 6 August 1587, James Elphinstone, brother of Robert, third Lord Elphinstone."
