  General Notes:

"§ 2. THE CRICHTONS AND BALFOURS OF NAUGHTON

Sir Peter Crichton and his wife Jonet Hay obtained in 1517 a Crown charter confirming to them the half of the barony of Naughton, with the tower, fortalice, &c. Crichton had been Master of the Wardrobe to King James III., and was descended from Lord Crichton, Chancellor of Scotland in the reign of James II. In 1524, the name of Sir Peter Crichton of Naughton occurs amongst those of the Scottish lords who signed the engagement to Queen Margaret, widow of James IV. In 1529, Sir Peter and his wife sold Naughton to David, son of ' his late brother Sir Patrick Crichton, of Cranstoun-Riddel,' reserving to himself free possession ; and the charter, which was confirmed under the Great Seal, was signed by Sir Peter for himself, and by a notary having the mandate of his wife Jonet, 'who did not know how to write (nescientis scribere)."

David married Janet LESLIE, daughter of George LESLIE 4th Earl of Rothes, Sheriff of Fife and Agnes SOMERVILLE, before 11 March 1540(1541).1 2 (Janet LESLIE was born about 1515 and died on 17 December 1591 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland 1 2 4.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Janet (Leslie), styled sister of David Pantar, Bishop of Ross, and therefore the daughter of Margaret Crichton (see Note below). She was married to David Crichton of Naughton, before 11 March 1540-41, when Sir Peter Crichton of Naughton, David, his grandson, and Janet Leslie, David's wife, had a tack in feufarm of the lands of Bogy and others. David Crichton died about 1553, and on 6 January 1553-54 the nonentry duties were gifted to David, Bishop of Ross, who, on 25 January, regranted them to his 'lovit sister,' Janet Leslie, relict of David Crichton .... She died at Kirkcaldy 17 December 1591."

from Scots Peerage (vol 7)

Note:

Historical Records of the Family of Leslie states very clearly that Janet Leslie was the daughter of George Leslie, Earl of Rothes, and Agnes Somerville. She was a full sister of Andrew, the fifth Earl, James, John, Peter and Helen Leslie.

The annulment of George Leslie's marriage to Margaret Crichton left them free to marry but did not de-legitimise their children, who are specifically named in the text as Norman, Master of Rothes, and William Leslie of Cairny.

The term 'lovit sister' cannot be taken as evidence of a full blood, or even a half-blood, relationship. Margaret Crichton remarried George Leslie, and so her children and his children would have been in a familial-, but not necessarily in a blood-relationship with one another, as would be the case with 'blended families' in modern times.
