Old Parish Registers
Marnoch parish Banffshire
Baptisms

"Anno 1729
Jano 19
Gordon
Peter Gordon of Ardmelie had a Daughter Baptized named Margrait"

"Son of Harry, of Avochie, 2094; m Mary (d. 1785) only child of Peter Gordon, of Ardmeallie (House of Gordon, n. (148)); 'she was a person of very superior habit and thereby did much to enable her husband to pay the £500 fine for his Jacobite tendencies' (Shearer's Rothiemay); they had three sons and two daus., one of whom, Ann, m. James Hay of the Rannes family, whose grandson succeeded, 1857, to Avochie, and adopted the son of Hay-Gordon."

from Gordons Under Arms

Note: The information here is uncharacteristically confusing. Peter or Patrick Gordon of Ardmeallie could not be said to have had only one child. Nor, as far as we know, did he have a daughter Mary, although he did have a daughter 'Margrait' baptised in 1723. 3 4 5

Mary married John GORDON 8th of Avochie, Jacobite 1745, son of Henry GORDON 7th of Avochie, Jacobite 1715 and Unknown.1 2 (John GORDON 8th of Avochie, Jacobite 1745 was baptised on 4 May 1708 in Rothes parish, Moray, Scotland and died on 3 April 1778 in Aberdeen, Scotland.)

  Marriage Notes:

"3. Mary (Gordon), who married John Gordon of Avochie, in the parish of Huntly, and died on April 5, 1785, leaving issue (Jervise's Epitaphs, ii. 382)"

from Coclarachie

"Gordon, John, of Avochie Son of Harry Gordon of Avochie. He cannot have been more than a lad at the time of the Rising. he must have escaped to France, and seems probably that he remained there until 1763. he married Mary, only child of Peter Gordon of Ardmeallie, a noted Whig. They had three sons and two daughters. He died at Aberdeen in 1778."

from Jacobites of 45

Note:

Both quotations above state that John's wife was an only child. This seems to have been far from being so.
