DUFF, James of Crombie (Crommey) 1
Another name for James was DUFF, James of Cromby.2 General Notes: James Duff was the second surviving son of William Duff, Provost of Inverness. 1 James married Jean MELDRUM heiress of Crombie (Crommey), daughter of Reverend Mr George MELDRUM of Crombie (Crommey), Minister of Glass and Jean DUFF, about 1696-1697.1 (Jean MELDRUM heiress of Crombie (Crommey) was born about 1681 1.) Marriage Notes: "About 1696 or 1697 he [James Duff] married his first cousin once removed (who was also his second cousin), Jean Meldrum, heiress of Crombie in Banffshire. She was the eldest granddaughter of Margaret Duff, Clunybeg's sister, who married John Meldrum of Laithers. This John Meldrum had two sons; the eldest, Peter Meldrum, succeeded him in Laithers, and the second, George Meldrum, was minister of Glass, and afterwards purchased the estate of Crombie. George Meldrum had also married his cousin once removed, Jean Duff, second daughter of Alexander Duff of Keithmore. He was very much older than his wife, being then sixty years of age, and had baptised her." |
