  General Notes:

"Alexander Cumyn was chosen arbiter of some differences betwixt Andrew, Bishop of Moray, and Hugh Rose of Kilravock (dated 1502)"

"Oct 23, 1543
There is an instrument of sasine in favour of Alexander Cumyn of Alter, in Mekle and Little Bronquhillis, Craigton, Logyurwell, Presley et Drummyne - confirmed 12th March 1553, by charter, from George, Earl of Huntley and Moray, to Alexander, Prior of Pluscardine, from whom Thomas Cumyn of Alter (the grandson and heir of Alexander) has seizen in these lands, 11th April 1567, with all his other lands of Altyre, &c. It appears that he (Alexander) had held them in 1526 from James de Dunbar of Cumnock, Sheriff of Moray, who confirms them to Alexander Cumyn of Alter in 1532."

"June 26, 1550
Alexander Cumyn, Baron of Altyr, obtained a decreet of exemption for himself, his kinnismen, and friends, against Alexander Dunbar, Sheriff of Elgin and Forres, and his pretendit deputis of the said schireffdome, who had, 'be himself, his frendis and servandis, divers and syndrie tymes, cruellie set upoun the saidis Alexr., his breder, freyndis, kynnismen, and servendis, and invadit hym and thaim for thair slauchtir ; and for that caus, and divers utheris caussis, the said schiref and his deputis ar veray suspect to be jugis to the said Alexr.,
his frendis,' &c. &c."

"In 1544, James (Grant of Freuchie 'The Bold') grants a Commission of Bailery to his trusty and well beloved friend Alexander Cumming, of Altyre, upon the lands and Barony of Kinloss, for all the days of his life." (page 100)

from History of Moray

"His (Sir Thomas Cumming's of Altyre) son, Alexander Cumming of Altyre, when a young man, was, in 1502, chosen one of the arbiters for settling some differences between Andrew bishop of Moray and Hugh Rose of Kilravock."

"On 24th July 1548 Alexander Cumming of Altyre became cautioner for John and Hugh Cumming his son and brother, and ten others, to underly the law for cutting and slaying with their swords eleven oxen and cows belonging to Alexander Urquhart of Burrisyards, and for casting down and destroying two houses built on his lands, and for other acts of oppression committed by them.

He had also a feud with the laird of Brodie; as we find that on November 14, 1550, Alexander Brodie of that ilk, and one hundred and twenty-six others, were denounced rebels and put to the horn, for not standing their trial for attacking Alexander Cumming of Altyre and his servants between his place of Altyre and the lands of Balnaferry, for their slaughter, and putting them to flight in great numbers on horse and foot, and for the cruel mutilation of one of them, a servant of Cumming.

On the 26th June of the same year he had obtained a decreet of exemption for himself, his kinsmen, clan, and friends from attending the sheriff court of Moray."

Alexander married Janet FRASER.1 (Janet FRASER was born about 1485.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Alexander Cumyn, second born but eldest surviving son and heir of Sir Thomas Cumyn of Altyre, married, during his father's lifetime, 'Janet,' daughter of Sir William Fraser of Cowie and Philorth, progenitor of the Lords Saltoun.
It is probable that the charter from John, Lord of the Isles, of 19th August 1496, was in restitution of this lady's dower. By her he left two sons:
1, Thomas ; and, 2, Ferquhard."

from Bruces and Cumyns

Note:

The author of
Family Records of the Bruces and the Cumyns appears to be referring above to William Fraser, 2nd of Philorth, as he later notes that "Sir William Fraser of Cowie and Philorth died in 1441." (page 462)

This would, of course, mean Janet Fraser would have to have been born before 1442 at the latest. This seems an unlikely timeline if her husband, Alexander Cumming, did not die until the early 1550s.

The Frasers of Philorth lists a Janet Fraser who married George Baird of Ordinschivas. She was a daughter of Alexander Fraser, 4th laird of Philorth and sister of William Fraser 6th of Philorth. However the dates do not allow that she was married to George Baird before her marriage to Alexander Cumming, so she is not the Janet Fraser in question. 1 7

Alexander next married Janet BROWN 'of Coulston'.1 (Janet BROWN 'of Coulston' was born about 1510.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Alexander Cumyn married, secondly, Janet, daughter of George Brown, Baron of Coalston, and widow of William Urquhart of Burdsyards. - Charter in Public Archives."

"Nov. 21 1541
A charter (confirmed by another charter, 1st December 1542) from this Alexander to Janetae Brown, relictae quandam Willielmi Urquhard de Burdsyards, nunc spousae Alexandri Cuming de Altyr, in vitale redditu et hasredibus inter ipsos Alexandrum et Janetam legitime procreand : quibus deficien hseredibus dicti Alexandri quibuscunque, de totis et integris terras dominicalibus de Dollas, &c. &c, to which Janet Brown's eldest son, Robert, became heir.

By this marriage there appears to have been also a son 'Alexander,' who, in Oct. 8,
1556, got a charter under the Great Seal: 'Alexander Cuming de St Germain du Pray, Filio quondam Alexandri Cuming de Altyr terrarum de Meikle Brumhillie,' &c, in Elgin and Forres ; also a third son, 'James" who is called 'Fader's 'brother to Sir Thomas." (pages 460 and 461)
