In 1871 the census for Liberton Midlothian recorded James Curran living with his family at Old Dalkeith Road Little France. James had been born in Crichton, Edinburghshire (Midlothian) and was recorded as 6 years of age. He was a scholar.

The 1881 census recorded James Cairns living in his parents' home at Cairnie Hinds House, Inveresk. He was recorded as an agricultural labourer aged 16 and his birth place was recorded as Crichton near Edinburgh.

James Cairns was a witness at the marriage of his brother Thomas on December 1884 at Newbattle.

The 1901 census for South Leith, Midlothian, recorded James and Sibella Cairns, and their five children between 2 and 11 years of age, living at 6 Halmyre Street. James, aged 36 years, had been born in Pathhead, Midlothian, and was a dock porter.

James Cairns was an unmarried man of 23 years of age. He worked as a machineman and resided at 4 Hamilton Crescent, Leith.

Sibella Tulloch was 25 years old and single. She was a dressmaker. her address was noted as Pirrie Street, Leith. Her father, Thomas Tulloch, a farm grieve, was deceased. Her mother, Sibella Towrie, was living.

The marriage was registered on 5 June 1888 at Leith, Gilbert Archer being the signing registrar. 7 10
