  General Notes:

"William was 'a younger son of Sir Robert Lawder of the Bass who got from his father part of the lands of Beilhaven and West Barns and was succeeded in these lands by his son Maurice.'[2Alexander Nisbet, Systems of Heraldry, Edinburgh, 1722, vol.1, p.432, where he erroneously names him Robert, not William.] All the Lauders of West Barns and Belhaven (subsequently Beilmouth, &c) are said to descend from this William. When his descendant, Robert (d.1709), was granted Arms by the Lord Lyon c1672 it was as 'descended of the family of the Bass'.

Miller, writing on Belhaven, states that 'part of the lands in this neighbourhood belonged to the family of Lauder of Bass.' [3History of Dunbar, by James Miller, Dunbar, 1830, p.261.]

This William Lauder witnessed a charter of Sir Robert Lauder of The Bass dated 3rd May 1514.[4National Archives of Scotland, GD124/1/432]

This William Lauder was a Burgess and Baillie of Dunbar. According to Charles Lawder he was designated 'of West Barns, and a Baillie of Dunbar 1534-56.'[5The Lawders of the Bass and their Descendants, Belfast,1914.] His widow Jonat Liddell's Testament refers to him as a Burgess of Dunbar."
